Names and distribution: Botanically the olive (Olea europea) belongs to the family of oil plants (Oleaceae) and is mainly spread in the Mediterranean region, in Italy, Greece, Spain and parts of North Africa. Olive trees are among the oldest trees in the world. They reach an age of over 2,000 years. The wood comes from agriculturally no longer productive olive tree cultures.

Appearance: Heartwood yellow-gray to salmon, strikingly bright sapwood. Heartwood intertwined with dark olive-brown stripes. Finely dispersed pores are arranged in radial groups, barely perceptible to the naked eye. Medullary rays very small. Grain usually irregular. Very decorative.

Properties: Density at u = 12% is 0.85 (0.80 ... 1.00) t/m3. The shrinkage from fresh state to u = 12% is specified tangentially as 7.8% and radially as 3.8%. The drying must be done slowly, as there is a pronounced tendency to crack. Olive can be machined well with all the tools. Planed and turned wooden surfaces are of striking hardness. The Brinell hardness of Olive is given as 45 .. 52. Olivewood’s durability is limited, but it is not used in the direct weathering.

Use: High quality turnery wood, suitable for writing instruments and wind instruments. Parquet available only in small dimensions. Because of the limited availability restricted applications.
